Matt nodded. His parents, despite being fairly successful (his mother especially, mostly thanks to her research with him), had been talking a lot about college and whether they could afford it for all three kids. Jessica was only two months older than he was, and Kyle was going into his junior year of highschool next year. With all that, and Matt planning on going into the expensive field of science himself, paying for college would be expensive for them. That was part of the reason why Matt decided to go to Kentucky University. It was fairly cheap, and he could get all his credits before transferring to a proper scientific college.
"You can take courses online, you know. They don't offer them all online, but I'm sure you could take one or two at Kentucky University, or one of the other colleges closer to here," he said, trying to be helpful. He didn't press the subject of college as Dahlia began to answer his return question. As he listened, Matt's expression became unsure. He never was good at trying to comfort people, so he decided not to in this situation. He figured Dahlia had told other people this before. If it was that personal or secret, she wouldn't have told him just now. As she spoke, he finished the granola bar and stood up to throw it away, pouring himself another glass of soda before putting the bottle back in the fridge and sitting down again.
He was glad to change the subject back to college, as he liked talking about it, and hadn't had the chance to do so with his siblings or his mother. Jessica had been busy with her own college applications, and his mother was delving into a new research project and hadn't been home in two weeks before he left. While diappointing, it had been nothing new, and Matt simply accepted her guarantee that she would call him while he was at college and find out how things were going when she wasn't quite so busy.
"I'm planning on going into either zoology or medicine. There are still some things I haven't checked out too much yet, like bioengineering. My mom showed me some cool stuff from her job, but I don't really know too much yet. I know how to engineer bacteria so that they glow in the dark and how to encourage the albino or melanistic gene in mice, but that's about it for now. I figure I can make my decision after I actually get into college," He shrugged slightly, not considering that it might be suspicious that he was thinking of going into bioengineering. That was, after all, the field of most of the scientists who worked on experiments like him.

"Both of my parents were bioengineers." She beamed. She really had been proud of their work, of them, and of the beautiful success they had had with their experiments on herself. It truly was tragic that she lost them, but her mind wasn't there at the moment, she was thinking about the idea of studying the same things her parents had. While she'd been at home, the things they taught her had been vastly interesting, and she certainly wouldn't be opposed to going to college for the same thing.
"It's cool that you're interested in that kind of stuff, I think science is incredibly interesting. All facets of it are just...." She paused, searching for a word. "So cool." Ha. Nice use of the English language, Dahlia. "If I were to go to school, I'd probably major in Neuroscience or BioPsychology or something like that. The way our minds work, and the possibilities of our minds, its just.. incredible." She smiled, thinking about her own experiment, and who she'd been before it. She definitely felt as though the experiment had improved her life ten fold.
Again she thought back to wanting to go to school, especially since meeting Matt, and seeing another experiment who was doing it. His words about taking online courses rang in her mind, but no one at the house had a computer, much less an internet connection, so that idea was shot. Not to mention that online courses still cost money, which she would eventually be running low on. No, it seemed that college, at least for now, wouldn't be an option for Dahlia, sadly.

"Seriously?" Matt was rather surprised to hear that both of Dahlia's parents had been bioengineers. He'd never met anyone else who was used as an experiment like he was. She seemed happy about it, which also seemed odd. Of course, Matt himself was hardly one to talk, since he didn't dislike his parents at all for experimenting on him, even if it was without his permission. It only made sense that they start early, otherwise his body might have rejected the treatments they gave him. "My mom's a bioengineer. I learned a bit about it from her. My dad doesn't really know about stuff. He's more of a literature and history buff than a scientist, but he still knows a bit about the field from my mom,"
"BioPsychology? Is that like telekinesis and whatnot? I'm not that familiar with neuroscience, personally, so I don't know too much about the specialties involved," Matt was smiling too at this point, more at the fact that he now had someone to talk to about this kind of stuff. Before, it had been mostly his friends from the skateparks. They were fun to hang out with, but not too great in the intellectual conversation department... Most of them, anyway. Still, it was nice to talk to someone who knew the terminology, and who had even had experiments performed like he did.
He'd definitely have to get to know Dahlia better, especially now. She seemed quite intelligent, and actually knew what she was talking about rather than just experiencing all the technology. Matt knew that about most experiments - they didn't really understand what was happening to them or why, only that the scientists had done it to them through some obscure proceedure involving more equations and chemical fusions than they could ever fathom. It was no fault of their own, of course; they just didn't have the education required to understand.

Dahlia nodded, a big smile plastered to her face as he asked if she was serious. She finally felt as though she had something in common with someone at the house. Previously, although she was an experiment, she'd never really felt comfortable talking about it, because no one seemed to understand how you could want to be an experiment, or be at all interested in the results. Honestly, Dahlia had been secretly impressed with every member of the house, and how they'd been altered. She'd never voice this opinion aloud however, because she knew (or had heard) how much pain they'd endured to become the way they appeared. And she also knew that many of them did not enjoy their 'gifts'. But now, it seemed as though she had found someone who shared her same fascinations, although she decided she might keep her more offensive beliefs to herself until later, when she knew him better.
And now, whats this? His mother was a bioengineer too? Dahlia could hardly believe her ears. Matt seemed to be a parallel of herself. Of course there were differences, but the similarities seemed to outnumber them. She pulled herself from her own thoughts to answer his question about Biopsychology.
"Well Biopsychology- well, most biopsychologists don't believe in telekinesis. Biopsychology is the study of psychology with the focus on the physiological side of things, on how different neurotransmitters affect the brain, which regions of the brain control which aspects of our psyche, that kind of stuff. It's very similar to Neuroscience but with more interest in our brains effect on emotions, and personality instead of its effects on bodily functioning and stuff like that."
She paused, wondering if she'd explained it okay. "Like take me, for example. I had surgery on my prefrontal cortex, to alter the neural pathways in that area of my brain. And the effect was tremendous, that was really the turning point for my powers. It really seemed to unlock a whole new dimension of things, which is why I'm so interested in studying it too, to see if there is even more that can be done, even more things that could be unlocked, and what effect would it have? Maybe something we've never seen before?" She smiled, and laughed softly at her own enthusiasm.
"Sorry, didn't mean to talk your ear off. I'll stop." She grinned and toyed a little bit with the empty package from her cereal bar, continuing her train of thought in her own mind.

Matt's brows furrowed slightly as he listened to Dahlia's explanation of BioPsychology. Now that she began to explain it, it made perfect sense. As he'd said, he didn't know much about Neuroscience, but he might just decide to learn a bit more about it sometime soon. The information wouldn't be hard to get to - he could just ask his mom to send him some medical files with information on it and read up on it there. Right now, that was definitely looking like a good idea, so that he could talk on more of an equal level with Dahlia about the neurosciences.
His concentration - and fascination - only increased further as Dahlia explained to him what kind of surgery had been performed on her. Apparently she'd volunteered for this, or at least supported the proceedure wholeheartedly, if her tone of voice and enthusiasm was any judge. "No, I don't mind at all. I don't know too much about the brain except that the prefrontal cortex controls problem solving ability, motor planning, personality, and whatnot." He paused for just a moment, debating whether to tell Dahlia the kind of proceedures performed on him, before finally deciding to go ahead with it.
"I know a bit about what was done to me, too. A lot of the changes were neural, actually. For me, it was alterations to the parietal and occipital lobes, the cerebellum, and the brain stem. Basically, the proceedures redirected a lot of the things no one can normally control to the reasoning parts of the brain. That's just for starters. I had radiation therapy that kicked my petuitary gland into overdrive and put it under the same kind of control. Other than that, there were a lot of chemical and hormonal injections I was given, and I've been on medication for most of my life. All that helped adapt my body so it can handle almost any changes I might try to implement. I'm off the meds now though, and there aren't too many problems. I mean, my metabolic rate is through the roof, and apparently I'm a bit of a cancer risk thanks to all the radiation, but I don't think I'll get cancer any time soon. If I do, it'll get caught early,"
Matt took a sip of his soda and laughed a little. "Wow... My turn now to start blabbing," he said, shaking his head a little. Technically, the details of his proceedure were secret, but Matt justified his recent "blabbbing" - as he so eloquently put it - by saying that this was probably one of the safest places to talk about stuff like this.

"Wow." She was truly blown away, and for all the talking that she'd been doing just moments ago, she fell silent. His experiment was truly as unique, successful, and in her opinion, just as powerful as her own had been. She was eager to see what he could do, but he'd mentioned that it took time, and she didn't want to pressure him.
"This is all really crazy." She looked at him seriously. "I mean, you. And me, and our experiments. Our parents. Its just... its unreal. I mean, what are the chances?" She tilted her head slightly, emphasizing her questioning look. "Its really weird. But really really cool too. Like, really cool. I think we sh-" She stopped, questioning whether what she was about to say really should be said right now, and here, in the kitchen of a place full of people who hated scientists and what they did to experiments. She was going to say that they should study together, learn more together, give each other ideas, feed off of each others suggestions and thoughts. Well, in not so many words.
But being that such a subject was verrry volatile in the company that the house offered, she kept her mouth shut. Maybe they could talk later, in more privacy. "-should talk more." She made sure to finish her previous sentence and not leave him hanging.
"But not right now." She gave him a meaningful look that she hoped would convey the sense that she didn't want to stop talking due to him or the subject being boring, or anything of the sort. Instead, it was because she was worried about being overheard, and more importantly, misunderstood.
"For now should I show you the boy's floor? Maybe give you a brief tour of the house?" She smiled, wishing inside that they could continue their discussion, for her mind was still spinning with all that had been said and she wanted desperately to keep going. But she knew better, she knew the suspicions that most people had for all things scientist related. She resigned herself now to continuing on with a lighter subject, and hopefully they'd get a chance to talk more in-depth later.

He couldn't really rationalize why, but Matt was rather proud - if that was really the word to use - that Dahlia seemed genuinely impressed with his explanation of his own experimentation. Her expression became more serious, and he followed suit to a slightly lesser extent, wondering what she had to say that required the change of tone. He drew his eyebrows together again though, as she paused for a couple moments. He was about to prompt her to go on when she finally finished.
Even then, he was simply going to say that they could talk now, but he was stopped by her look and forced to consider the situation the way she was, or try to at least. Really, he didn't know why they couldn't continue their conversation right here and now, but he took her meaningful look as a promise for future explanation and didn't complain about it. He'd take an explanation later so long as they got to continue their conversation. All this information was incredible; that he would find someone so interested in the same general subjects he was and knowledgeable as well! He shoved down his temporary disappointment, however, and nodded slightly as Dahlia offered to give him a tour of the house.
"Sure," he said, draining the last bit of soda out of his glass and setting the glass beside the pancake-pan in the sink. "D'you know if there are any free rooms? I don't mind rooming with someone, but it would still be cool to have my own place to be for a while,"

Dahlia crumpled the cereal bar wrapper in her fist as she scooted her chair back away from the table. She winced slightly as she stood up and the bare skin on the backs of her thighs that had been touching the chair peeled away from it, as generally happened in those older wooden chairs. She felt slightly self-conscious now that she knew the backs of her legs were going to be red for a while, but she got over it and threw her trash away before leading Matt out of the kitchen and into the living room.
"I'm not sure if there are any free rooms but we can check if you like." She smiled back at him, and waved her arm around at the living room, Vanna style. "Here's the living room, you know where the kitchen is of course," She walked a bit further towards the back of the house and the back door. "That's the back door, and there's a huge backyard out there with some great hedges if you ever feel like shifting outside and still don't want to be caught." She winked playfully before turning and pointing down a short hallway. "There's a small bathroom down there, but its just a toilet and sink, no shower, those are upstairs." At this she motioned with her hand back the way they came, then returned to the living room and headed for the stairs.
"All of the girl's rooms are on the second floor, see that's mine on the very end." She pointed and looked back at him to see if he'd seen it. She only paused for a second though before continuing on up the stairs to the third floor. "And all of the boy's dorms are up here." She smiled, proud of her little mini-tour of the house. Your bathroom is at the end of the hall, and now let's see if we can find an empty room for you..." Her voice trailed off as she reached out quickly through the walls to feel for other minds in the rooms. There were a few with no one in them, as determined by her "brain scan" as she liked to call it, but after opening a few of the doors and finding them already occupied with belongings, there was only one room left. At the third door down, Dahlia double checked again that there was no one in the room before opening the door, and to her delight, as she pushed the door open, it appeared to be genuinely empty. She smiled over her shoulder at Matt. "Looks like you're in luck!" She stepped aside to let him in and continued eyeing the room. It certainly was dusty enough, and it smelled like... old. It kind of gave her the creeps, but she was sure it would smell better soon enough after having a living occupant for a few days.

Matt wasn't paying the slightest bit of attention to the back of Dahlia's legs. He had more interesting things to look at, like the house he was going to be living in. At this point, he was getting rather excited about actually moving in. Before, it had been a very normal thing. Go to college, get a room in a house with lots of other people... Not only was this house fundamentally different from any other dorm house, but he already had someone to talk to. That was new; usually Matt had to go around introducing himself for a couple days before he really met anyone. That, coupled with the I'm-actually-moving-in-here-now feeling, made the whole tour seem like something just short of monumental.
He walked behind Dahlia as she showed him around, puzzling over the fact that there didn't seem to be anyone about. He supposed it wasn't really surprising. After all, not only was it relatively early for anyone to get up who didn't have a job (which was probably just about everyone in this house), but he was new here, and if any of the others were suspicious of him - and they had a right to be - they probably wouldn't show themselves for a while. All this was very surreal, in a way, but Matt took it more or less in stride.
He took the stairs two at a time, expecting to have more of a pause between the second floor landing and the third floor. They merely stopped to take a glance down the hall and for Dahlia to point out her own room at the end. Matt didn't ask whether she had a roommate, although he was curious. He made sure to remember which room was hers, though. Then, they were on their way upstairs again, and Matt watched while Dahlia opened a couple of the doors in the hall. He saw seven doors, all closed, including the bathroom she had just pointed out. Just as he was glancing back down the stairs, he heard an exclamation of victory from Dahlia and turned back around. It was the third room from the stairs, directly in the middle of the hallway. How fitting.
Stepping into the room and flipping the lightswitch, Matt took a look around. It smelled a bit like mothballs and mold... Not to mention dust. He could see little motes of dust drifting through the air where the sun shone in through the window. The room was fairly sparse, with two almost moldy-looking beds with lacy blankets and a pair of dressers. It was a reminder that someone would probably be moving in with him eventually, but Matt chose to ignore that now and think about it when the time came. He'd have to get some paint in here, and replace the bedspread... Not to mention the curtains. He had a vision of what he wanted to do now, and grinned as he turned to look at Dahlia again.
"Couple of questions," he said, holding up three fingers to indicate the exact number. "One: is there a pool outside, and if not, is there a public pool somewhere in town? Two: How high is the noise tolerance around here? And three: Is it taboo to paint the walls and mess around with the rooms?" Important questions, all.

Dahlia smiled as he looked around his new room, appraising it. She could tell by the grin on his face that he had something in mind for the room. This look had reminded her of her own room, and the plans that she had had for it that had never come to fruition. Just as she was thinking about the magazine wallpaper she'd been wanting to make, his voice sounded again.
"Oh! Umm... pool... pool..." She paused, wondering if she'd even actually been in the backyard to SEE if there was a pool. And she couldn't remember a time that she had been back there. "Actually, I don't know, this is kind of embarrassing, but I don't think I've actually been in the backyard." She grinned sheepishly before going on. "But as for a public pool I'm sure there is one. We'll just have to find it!"
The prospect of going swimming was a fun one, just as was decorating her room, and talking about the possibilities of the neurosciences. Matt seemed to have reminded her what it was like to be an active, alive young adult. Life was supposed to be fun. And here, at the house, where most of its inhabitants were generally not happy people, she found it hard to remember that. She'd spent most of her time here at the house being afraid of being followed, or feeling depressed because of her fairly recent parent's deaths. But Dahlia was not a sad person. It was in her nature to be alive and curious, always seeking the hidden truth and striving to discover more of life's great secrets. For some reason, the atmosphere in the house had seemed to make her forget those things, it had made her sad and complacent.
"As for the sound thing- I'd say it just depends on who your neighbors are. I know Eric lives in the next room down, but I'm not sure about the room on the other side. You might want to check in with them and see how they feel." She shrugged, wondering what he would be doing that would make so much noise. "But I'm capable of creating a sound barrier, so if you're ever in the mood to make a lot of noise without disturbing anyone, you can just enslave me." She smiled and laughed, picturing Matt chaining her up at the door and forcing her to create an endless sound barrier for him, to pass him the remote, to bring him food, all without leaving her post at his door.
"And I think painting the walls is fine, but I'm not sure I know what you mean by messing around with the rooms? I think as long as its something that can be undone, its fine." She smiled and nodded, fairly pleased with her answers but also very aware of the fact that she really knew none of the answers, that hers had simply been educated guesses. She would have gone to ask Zephyr, but she didn't know where she was, or even where to find her. These thoughts disheartened her a bit. She'd lived in the house for a while now, and yet she knew hardly anything about it.

Matt raised his eyebrows quite a bit when Dahlia answered his first question. "You've never been in the backyard? Seriously?" he asked. The pool question was easily answered; all he had to do was to go down into the backyard and see. The grounds here couldn't possibly be /that/ extensive that he couldn't see the pool from the back door, after all. Still, it was odd to him that Dahlia lived here, and yet had never been in the back yard. He'd have to remedy that situation very soon... Maybe even now.
Before he had the chance to ask her though, she was answering his second question. Her answer made sense. He wasn't really planning on making a whole lot of noise, but he did like to have music playing pretty much 24/7 in his room at home. Suddenly, a thought jumped into his mind that made him rather disappointed. He'd left his CD player at home... And his CDs. He knew he forgot something important. Well, he'd have to go into town at some point and buy a new one. That wouldn't be hard, or expensive for that matter... If he could get a hold of some blank CDs. He had music on his laptop, so he'd have to convert it to blank CDs in order to play in in a normal CD player. Either that, or use some extra money to get a pair of speakers for his laptop instead. He went for the second option, come to think of it.
He laughed lightly at her choice of words, picturing an odd scene where he was being waited on hand and foot while lounging in his bed. The image didn't last more than a moment or two though, until he began focusing more on the answer to his third - and most important - question. "Well, I don't plan on tearing down any walls, if that's what you're thinking," he said with a grin. "I'm thinking a new paint job after I tear down this wall-paper, and some posters. I've got more ideas, but I don't want to get too ahead of myself right now," There was a slight pause, then Matt looked from the walls to Dahlia and asked, "Hey, do you want to go outside for a bit? We can check out the mysterious backyard, and I bet there's a frisbee in the house somewhere if there's no pool,"

"Sure!" She replied sunnily to his invitation. "Lemme go grab my flip flops real quick." She started out the door before pausing and turning back to Matt. "Wait-" She laughed at herself and shook her head. "I'll just have them meet us at the back door. You ready?" She grinned, happy to have someone to be alive with. She really was so glad that she'd answered the door this morning. Having met Matt might prove to be one of her happiest experiences at the house. Certainly one of the more exciting experiences.
"Oooh, I hope there's a pool. I mean- you'd think there'd be a pool, you know, for all those experiments who needed water. Can't expect them to hang out in the bathtub all day, right?" She giggled at her lame excuse for humor, but honestly Matt was making her a little nervous. Not that it was anything HE was doing. Just the fact that he was there, he was cool, interested in the same things Dahlia was, he wasn't depressing or low key, and he was pretty cute... She had to avert her mind to another subject before blushing and embarrassing herself. So instead she thought about.... cheese? She laughed out loud at her random shift to cheese, but quickly slapped a hand to her mouth to stifle it.
((Oh boy. Dahlia's been turned into a silly, giggling school girl. Thanks a lot Matt.... XD))

Matt started out of what he had recently deemed his room, closing the door behind him. As he started downstairs with Dahlia, he idly hoped that no one would take his room while he was outside. Not likely, he decided. He'd have to get his stuff in there soon though, especially so he could set up Jasper and Celia's cages. They couldn't stay out in the car forever, after all... But surely another twenty minutes while he messed around in the back yard wouldn't matter. Then he could bring them upstairs and set up their cage, and go back to doing whatever it was he'd found to do.
He shook his head a little as Dahlia said her shoes would meet them at the door. He'd never hear that statement again, he'd bet. This was going to take some getting used to. "Yeah, I'm ready. If there's a pool I've got to grab my trunks out of the car, but otherwise I'm ready," He went down the stairs at the same pace Dahlia was, glancing up from the creaking steps as she spoke. "Well, this house is pretty old, and no offense but it doesn't seem like a lot of money goes through here. Getting a pool installed is pretty expensive, too. Let's wait and see if there is one first though," he said, finally reaching the bottom of the second flight of stairs. He skipped over the bottom two steps entirely, instead jumping down over them to land facing the steps. He didn't land quite right though, and staggered back just a bit before heading towards the back door.
Throughout all this, he completely failed to notice Dahlia's attitude, or at least the nervous one that swept over her for a few seconds on their way down. He did hear her apparently arbitrary laugh, but assumed she was just laughing at his momentary stumble. He didn't care though, even in the slightest bit. He spotted several pairs of shoes by the back door, but only one pair of them were floating. It was pretty easy to pick up which ones were Dahlia's. "Yours, I think?" he asked rhetorically, putting a hand on the door handle and waiting for Dahlia to catch up before he'd open it.
((Indeed. xD And Matt... He'd completely oblivious. For now.))

Dahlia galloped down the stairs after Matt, her barefeet making a dull dumdum-dumdum-dumdum sound on the steps as she did so. Once she reached the bottom, she grabbed the corner of the wall and swung herself around it, now facing Matt at the end of the hallway by the back door.
"Yup, those're mine!" She pulled them down onto the ground in front of her and slipped her feet into the green old-navy flip flops. "Okay! Ready!" She stood up, brushed the front of her shorts off in one smooth motion, then landed her open palms on her hips.
She followed Matt outside, having to squint for a second as the late morning sun shone brightly into her eyes. She brought a hand up quickly to shield her eyes, then looked out to the yard, scanning for a pool.
((I don't know who's decision it should be whether the house has a pool or not. I'll leave that up to someone else. XD))

Matt watched as Dahlia put her flip-flops on and started out the door, holding the door open with one hand as he stepped out onto the small concrete step just outside the door. His eyes adjusted to the light fairly quickly (with a little intentional help), and he glanced around the yard. He couldn't see all of it thanks to the presence of a couple trees, but he could tell immediately that there was no familiar reflection of the sun off clear blue water. No pool, in other words. Matt was rather disappointed, but he didn't mind too much. There was a pool in town, after all, and for now he and Dahlia could always find something else to have fun with, like the frisbee he'd mentioned.
"Huh. I guess that scratches out that idea..." he said, glancing to his right at Dahlia, who was still squinting in the late morning light. "We can always go into town a little later, when the public pool will be open. For now, what do you want to do? I bet we could find a frisbee or something, or if you do that kind of stuff, I've got a skateboard out in my car," He shrugged, indicating that he was just tossing out ideas and obviously passing the baton to her to decide how to amuse themselves now.
((Don't worry. I talked to Tobey about it, and the general idea was that there was no pool because it wouldn't make too much sense. Soo... I went with the "no pool" idea.))

Dahlia pouted, sticking her lower lip out and knitting her eyebrows together in what most people would call a "puppy dog look". "Poop." She said, scuffing her foot along the ground in disappointment. "I was really looking forward to going swimming!" She looked up at Matt, still shielding her eyes, as he offered some other solutions. She pulled her features into a thoughtful look, pondering what they should do. She enjoyed frisbee, but that could get boring after a while with just two people. She'd never even been on a skateboard, so that nixed that idea. Or did it? She thought about it for a moment- trying to imagine herself on a skateboard. At first she laughed, picturing herself wobbling and falling off, but she tweaked her vision a bit to see herself skating well. And it was a pretty cool sight, she had to admit.
"Ummmm, do you have two skateboards?" She asked, tilting her head inquisitively. She'd wait until they were actually on the boards to inform him that she'd never placed a foot on a skateboard before.

Matt shook his head slightly. "Nah," he said. "Just one. I couldn't bring another one even if I wanted to anyway. My car's packed with stuff already," He shrugged a bit, starting around the side of the house slowly and waiting for Dahlia to catch up. "I'll go get mine from the car though, and we can take turns. The curbs around here are pretty high, so maybe we can get a couple grinds off, huh?"
As they exited out into the front yard, Matt remembered his birds again. "Um, I can't stay out too much longer though, alright? I still need to take care of my two birds. If I can live here, then I need to bring them inside, but if not, I'll have to take them out for a few minutes anyway to let them walk around. They've been in their carrying crate for a few days straight already, which is more than they're used to,"
