((This thread has no where to go, as it doesn't fit any of the subboards. So I stuck it here, because I think it is rather important for the emerging plot.))
High above the rest of the city in his exclusive penthouse, Daegeus leafed through a tall stack of files filled with pictures and descriptions of young adults- each with their own...uniqueness. In the corner behind him a large raven preened her feathers, paying no attention whatsoever.
"These are the ones we are looking for." Daegeus looked up at the light tenor. A thin man lounged on the other side of the cherrywood desk, hands steepled under his chin. His dress screamed "academic"- right down to the shiny leather patches on the elbows of his tweed jacket. A pair of thin framed glasses perched rather precraiously on the tip of his nose. He was known only as "the good Doctor" to Daegeus. "These are the only ones escaped in this area that have not been found."
Daegeus glanced back to the file. "I ha' met these already." He pulled out six descriptions of varying length.
"what!" The good Doctor exclaimed, leaning forward as his hands hit the arms of his chari with an omnious thud. "I told you to stay away from them..."
Daegeus tisked. "Doona fash yoreself, mon. Just a wee bit of...reconissance. These were an...unexpected complication." He flipped through the files. Fox, bird of prey, tiger, tiger, cheetah... "These five are no worry. But this one-" He pulled out the thickest file with an elegant flick of his wrist. "This one could be trouble." He passed to file to the Doctor.
The other man took a breath at the grainy picture of a tall light-haired woman. "You've met her? Seen here?"
"Aye."
THe visitor sighed, and leaned back, apparently appeased. "Tell me."
Daegeus shrugged. "The fox is protective-" he handed the good DOctor the appropriate file "but of no worry. He may be an issue if anyof your other...people...are found wandering baout the place."
The god DOctor waved that away with one carefless hand. "Not to worry. You're the only one we have on active field duty at the moment."
Daegeus felt like snarling, but refrained. The Doctor noticed the flash of insanity in the taller man's golden eyes, though. It made him simle. "This one...I doona know. I think he will follow the lead of the others." He passed over the birdman's file. "The young tiger is unpredictable, but too wee to be of much worry. The older tiger could be an issue, but she has the heart of a rabbit." He passed over two more files.
Oh, yesss, that frightened child inside the strong feline body-
"The one to be worried o'er is the one called "Joan" in yore report, bu' "Zepher" by everyone else. She... she..." Daegeus shivered, folding his arms across his chest. "She has a strong sheild. I could break it, but she would know I had. I havna ever met someone I couldna "read" stright away." he looked away.
Should have broke in, took her fears. Should have.
"Then you were right not to." The thin young man glanced over daegeus' shoulder to the large black bird behind. "Have anything to add, Corva?" His tone was warmer, sweeter, like a father might speak to his favorite child.
The raven looked up from her preening- one eye blue the other the same gold as Daegeus' own eyes. "Gonna costja." Her voice was rough and low, more croak than words but understandble all the same.
Daegeus smiled. "Predictable bird." Reaching up, he unpinned the diamond earring in his left ear. "Here." He offered her the jewelry.
She cocked her head at it, then shook herself. "Costja bigger, so so cheap pretty kitty man. Wanna big sparkly."
"Fine! Here!" Greatly amused, the good Doctor tossed a quarter over Daegeus' head.
With a joyful chortle, the raven caught it in her beak. Pinning the doctor with her blue eyes she muttered around her beakful of coin, "Mind is twisted, c...com..." she stuttered, the ruffled out her ragged throat feathers, "Com-plee-cat-ted pretty. Mush to learn, to loose." She turned her head to look out her other eye. "Many many possible tomorrows. Depend on him" She stabbed at Daegeus with her thick black beak "And herrr". Corva all but purred on the last word, nodding at the thick file still in the good Doctors' hands.
"Well, that's helpful." Daegeus muttered.
Corva coughed angrily. "Wanna different bird? Getcha a seagull. Not lying. Is tomorrow forecast."
Daegeus sighed. "You'd better go. Soothing her feathers always takes a while."
The good doctor sighed, then stood. He replaced the files on the desk and turned around. AS he walked towards the elevator doors, he called over one thin shoulder "Don't go the the house again, Daegeus. You are here solely on our forbearance, and we are not a forgiving group" He hit the button for the first flor, the the elevator dorrs slid shut behind him.
Daegeus snarled, his eyes swirling darker and darker yet. "I could crush him..."
Crush him...
Corva cackled to herself, running her beak over her quarter. "You wont. You like pretties. " She laughed. "We both like, pretty kitty man. Much much like."
