Pounding bass could clearly be heard for half a block around as the pizza delivery car sped down the roads. It was his last delivery of the evening, and at 11:00 at night, also the last delivery before the Pizza Hut downtown closed. He didn't expect to see anyone on the road around here, nor should he. It was a quiet suburban area, and few people stayed out that late, even at this time of year. So he played his music as loud as he wanted, drumming the steering wheel and singing along. He didn't see the stop sign until he had nearly gone past it. He swore, looking back at the octagonal sign before returning his gaze to the road. With a startled cry, he slammed on the brakes, bringing the car to a screeching stop. A huge cat - a tiger! - just ran in front of his car. He stared at the empty spot in front of his car in disbelief, mouth gaping open. No... He couldn't have seen that. It must have been a stray dog or something... A really, really big stray dog. He was more tired than he thought if he was imagining things like that...
Kaspar glared out of the bushes as the pizza truck drove off. How come he didn't stop at the red sign? Jake had showed him the driving manual, and it said that cars were supposed to stop at the stop signs. It made perfect sense, after all. But that car had almost hit him! Kaspar waited for the car to pass by before stepping out of the bushes, "harrumph"ing indignantly before heading off down the street. He had decided to visit this abandoned house at last, just to see if there was anything inside. Maybe he could get a soft bed to sleep in, or at least a break from the constant hiding. Maybe they even had toys inside! Or a big pile of cushions... That would be fun.
With that thought, Kaspar switched from a slow walk to a trot, and then to a run as he finally saw the house. His imagination was completely getting away from him, but he wasn't pessimistic enough to consider that the house might be empty - or worse, full of people who would throw things at him or send dogs after him. No, his mind was completely set on the pile of cushions he was sure would be waiting for him in the bedroom, right near the equally comfortable bed. And there would be toys; maybe a soccer ball for him to play with. There had to be food in the kitchen too. There just had to be. Shortbread cookies - his absolute favorite - and milk... Or maybe some of the soft food he'd been fed before Madam made him leave. Either one would be great... Maybe there was a TV in there too for him to watch. He could have the whole house to himself! The thought that abandoned houses were completely empty by nature never occurred to him, so lost was he in his fantasies of good food and comfortable beds.
He started to run right up the front lawn when he finally skidded to a stop, tilting his head to one side in puzzlement. Why were there lights on inside? Something had finally clicked inside his overly optimistic mind: Lights meant people. When lights were on, it meant there were people inside. If the house was abandoned, why would there be people inside? Unless they were people like him looking for food and a place to sleep. But there were four lights. Two downstairs, one on the second floor, and one on the third floor. They wouldn't leave the lights on in rooms they weren't going to, would they? There must have been more than one. But what if they weren't like him? What if they were mean, or... What if they had big, furrry dogs that barked and growled and stole all the food?
Suddenly uncharacteristically cautious, Kaspar began to back away from the house, the tip of his tail twitching in agitation and ears laid back in fear. He didn't want dogs to come out... But if they didn't have dogs and were nice, maybe they'd let him in... Maybe. He stood there a few moments, uncertain, but then the decision came to him as suddenly as his resolve to come to the house in the first place. He would go around back and look for kennels (to his knowledge, everyone who had a dog had to have a kennel for it), and if there weren't any, he'd look in the windows. If the people were nice, they wouldn't chase him away. If they were mean, then he could get away before they could throw things or chase him. Happy with his new decision (although still wary of dogs), Kaspar started around the side of the house in quick, quiet steps.
He found a thick hedge blocking his path, but that didn't stop him, he poked his head through, pushing his body through until he could see out the other side. He looked around quickly, eyes peeled for the tall wire fences that held barking dogs or for the dogs themselves if they were running free. Neither seemed to be the case, so he pushed his way through the hedge completely and walked slowly up to the house, looking up at the window. It was just above his head, so he couldn't have any trouble getting up high enough to look in. It was being brave enough to do so that was his problem. After a few seconds of uncertainty, Kaspar finally reared up on his hind legs and set his front feet against the window sill. It was more rickety than it looked though, and he only got a glimpse of the kitchen - and someone moving around inside - before the sill split and he fell down, hitting his nose on the window pane as he went. He heard voices inside and saw the window begin to go up. For a moment, he hesitated, not knowing what to do, but then he turned and started to run away.

The person Kaspar had seen through the kitchen window was likely Tonya. She was awake, of course, being that she almost never slept at night. And eleven o' clock was about her lunch time. As such, she was wandering around the kitchen, looking to fix herself something to eat. She opened a few cabinets, and managed to locate a loaf of bread. A turkey sandwich was sounding really good right then.
But right as Tonya was opening the refrigerator, she heard a loud noise, very close by. The sound of something breaking, right outside the window. Tonya was startled, but then quickly reminded herself that it was about this time of night when people started dreaming . . . and having nightmares. "Probably not real," she reassured herself. She went over to the window to see what it was, opening the window a little to get a better look. She was not nearly as frightened as a normal person would have been upon seeing a tiger outside, but she was still a bit nervous. Around here, you could never quite tell what was real and what wasn't. "Are you a nice tiger?" she called out in a loud whisper, hopefully soft enough that nobody would overhear her talking to what could very well be thin air, but loud enough for the tiger to hear her; if it was a dream tiger, there was a chance that it would be friendly. But Tonya's voice quivered a bit when she spoke, as she considered the possibility that this tiger could be real, and deadly.

Kaspar blinked away the tears that had momentarily blurred his vision. They hadn't appeared because he was sad. Rather, they were there because he had hit his nose fairly hard against the window pane, and it stung quite a lot. Not that it hurt that much, but the tears were merely a reaction. As his vision was blurred, he didn't quite see the small divot in the ground and stepped in it as he moved away from the window. He was somewhat glad that he did however, for otherwise he wouldn't have heard the voice drifting out from the window. It sounded shy and a little scared, but not angry. That was good; Kaspar didn't like it when people were angry at him.
He paused, turning around partway in time to see her push the window open the rest of the way. Light poured out of the small kitchen from the light hanging from the ceiling, and the smell of turkey wafted out towards him. He loved turkey... He loved food in general, actually, and turkey just happened to be the food that was nearest him at the moment. Nose twitching and ears perked in interest (not just at the food, but at the girl standing inside the window), he paused to listen to what she said. Asked, actually, once he paid attention.
Was he a nice tiger? He wasn't sure how to answer that. "Yes," might have been appropriate, but he wasn't really sure what she meant by "nice." Maybe she thought he was a normal tiger and that he wouldn't answer her. He knew from Jake's science class textbooks that there were striped cats like him in zoos and in other countries that didn't talk and didn't live with people (he didn't know how they got food on a regular basis).
"Uh... I'm Kaspar," he said quietly, his voice a good deal deeper than one might expect if they knew him. It was more of a growl, really, but one that formed words. He stepped back a little closer to the window, his eyes adjusting to the light quickly so that he could see the girl better. She was skinny, with long hair. He hadn't seen many people with long hair before, and it surprised him a little. How did they grow it that long? His fur didn't get any longer than it was now except in the winter, and Jake and Madam's hair was always short too. Maybe long hair just happened. He didn't really understand how it worked.

Okay, so it was almost definitely an imaginary tiger. Real tigers didn't talk. Tonya sighed with relief and visibly relaxed, as she realized that not only was this an illusory tiger, but it seemed to be friendly, as well. "I'm Tonya," she said quietly. "Come inside. The door's right over here," she added, pointing towards the door and then disappeared from view as she walked away from the window towards the door.
But something was bugging her as she walked down the hallway. Something about the tiger didn't seem dream-like at all, and Tonya had no clue what it was. It was a /talking tiger/ for pete's sake! How could it /not/ be a hallucination? But still, something didn't quite seem right.
As Tonya reached the door, and she went over what the tiger had said, it hit her what had been bugging her. The tiger had paused before speaking, almost as if he had been confused. Dream-beings were almost never confused about anything. Nothing could throw them for a loop. You could say almost any ridiculous thing to a dream, and they would answer without missing a beat, and without even considering that you'd said something odd. But Tonya just shrugged and opened the door. There were exceptions to every rule, after all. The other possibility, that this talking tiger was really there, right outside, was far more ridiculous than a confused illusion.

ooc| Sorry I haven't posted recently. I've been really busy.
bic| Kaspar watched the window for several seconds after the girl, Tonya, moved away. Was she serious? She wanted him to come inside? That was weird, considering that the other humans he had met up with recently had chased him away. Any other experiment to come here probably would have been suspicious of this sudden act of kindness, the thought never occurred to Kaspar. He had, after all, been bred and raised to be trusting to just about everyone. He'd never had any reason to distrust people, and so he didn't.
As such, when the door opened Kaspar bounded inside. He almost tripped over the doorstep on the way in, then proceeded to skid on the kitchen tile and bump into the kitchen table. The smell of turkey pervaded the room, and made Kaspar's mouth water. He hadn't eaten anything that wasn't close to being rotten in over two weeks, and was craving the kind of food he used to eat. He used to have steaks and other delicious foods for his meals. He never questioned why he had different foods than the dogs (after all, he was a pet like them, even if he was there first). He'd tried the dogs food before, and it tasted absolutely revolting.
Kaspar turned to Tonya as she closed the door and sat down on the floor, not reclining too much yet. He wanted to make sure there weren't any dogs in the house, and also make sure he was welcome to stick around for a while. But the smell of the food was so tempting, he had to ask about it. "Do you have extra turkey?" he asked, giving Tonya the look that had always worked with Jake whenever he was hungry and Madam didn't want him to have any more snacks. Sure, maybe he was a little overweight, but the snacks were completely worth it.

Tonya smiled at Kaspar's eagerness as he bounded inside. But there was still a nagging sense of worry as she closed the door. For one thing, she couldn't be completely sure that he was a 'good tiger.' Any dream, no matter how innocent, could turn into a nightmare at a moment's notice. And here she was, inviting a potentially dangerous tiger right into the House! I /must/ be crazy, she thought to herself.
But she shook off those thoughts. For one thing, she was still certain that Kaspar was imaginary, and therefore any injuries inflicted by him would be gone by the time the dream was over. For another, even though she didn't admit it to herself, she was lonely. And illusionary friends were safer than real ones; they wouldn't judge you, they didn't see your faults, and, in the event you were to wind up hating them, they would be gone in the morning.
Tonya heard Kaspar's question, and adopted a confused look. Huh? Turkey? Tonya looked around, and then realized she had left the package of turkey on the counter. Oh yeah, that's right, she was making herself a sandwich. It couldn't hurt to give an imaginary tiger some turkey, could it? "Sure thing," Tonya said, getting a bowl from a cabinet to put the turkey in. Since he wasn't real, she could just put the turkey back away after the dream ended. She set the bowl on the floor, put about ten slices of turkey in it, and stepped back to give the tiger some space to eat. "Where are you from?" she asked, trying to make polite dinnertime conversation.

Kaspar was still surprised at how nonchalant this girl seemed, but he was through questioning this rather odd sequence of events. He was in a house whose temperature was thankfully much cooler than the outside heat, he had company, and there was food. Not just food, but a plateful of turkey. He preferred red meat over white, but Kaspar was far from complaining. He loved almost any kind of food, whether it be meat, bread, fruit, or even some vegetables. He didn't mind them too much, so long as they had plenty of seasoning on them.
As Tonya put the bowl of turkey down on the floor, Kaspar smiled widely and stood up, padding across the kitchen to it. He sniffed it, letting the smell linger pleasantly in his nose. This was closer to what he was used to. He opened his mouth to take a bite of the turkey, but remembered his manners and his fear before he ate. Mane bristling a little, he looked up at Tonya and said, "Thank you," He bent his head again and took a bite of the turkey, trying to make it last. He could have easily eaten the entire bowl in two swallows, but he wanted the taste to last. Before he took the second bite, he raised his head to answer Tonya. "Well, I'm from a place called California, but... I don't know where I am now. But it's nice here. It's cooler than where I live,"
If they didn't have any dogs here, maybe Kaspar could stay until he found a way home... If Tonya would let him. She was very nice to him, and although he smelled other people here, the scent was several hours old. Maybe she'd just had a party. He could smell fresh scent drifting from somewhere in the house, but he passed it off as a few guests that were staying late. It made sense. Jake had friends over every now and then, and Kaspar could smell them upstairs for days after they left. Even if there were other people living here, Kaspar didn't mind so long as they didn't have dogs and so long as they were nice. The dogs though... They were the only thing that really bothered him.
There was a short pause, wherein Kaspar looked around cautiously, then glanced back to her and asked, "Um... You don't have any dogs here, do you?" His ears went back a little at the thought, but he wasn't as worried as he had been, since he didn't smell any of the "doggy-smell" - as Jake put it - that filled a home which had dogs.

Raphael came in through the back from his nights' hunt. It was good, there were a few decent sized rabbits, and even a large squirrel. His paw-like feet allowed for him to bound through the unregularly open door, and over the thresh hold easily.
On the floor in front of him was what he had not expected. It was a tiger. And it was eating, not like it was a bad thing, but it made Raphael's hair stand up on the back of his neck.
He had to get out. He bound right back out of the back door, and tried to get in through the front. It was just his luck. No one locked the door, or had someone unlocked it? There was no time for speculation.
Raphael snuck through the house, listening while the tiger thanked the girl that he had seen for so many night after he and his sister came to live at the house. His ear upright, he changed his stance. He doubled over, so that his hands, which were quickly changing into the paws that he had recently used for hunting with, were out. With that, he stalked into the kitchen, to see what would happen next.

Tonya watched the tiger eat, smiling a bit nervously. "California, huh? Well, you're in Kentucky, now," she stated simply. She didn't act at all surprised that he was from so far away; then again, he could have said he was from Jupiter, and she wouldn't have been surprised.
The night was getting later, and at least a few of the residents were beginning to dream. Various things began to appear around the room, but Tonya ignored them, as she had had to learn to do. Thus, she paid no mind to the dogs, and the doggie smell, that had suddenly appeared in the kitchen. However, she did notice that the very next thing the tiger asked was "You don't have any dogs here, do you?" For a moment, the thought occurred to Tonya that maybe the tiger /was/ real, and he was thinking about dogs. Or, she countered, maybe he was just from the same dream as the dogs were. Still, Tonya's doubt was growing. He wasn't interacting in any way with the dogs, for one thing. "I don't think so," she said, finally answering his question after having paused for a moment or two to reason out her thoughts.
Tonya nearly ignored Raphael's entrance, thinking he was just another figment, but she just happened to recognize him out of the corner of her eye. He had been at the House meeting about a month ago. So there was a fairly good chance that he was really there. Not a guarantee, mind you, but there was no real reason for Tonya to think he /wasn't/ there. She turned to face him, her demeanor immediately shifting to the shy, quiet girl that she became whenever she was around real people, and she said in an awkward voice, "Hey, um," she sounded like she was going to continue, but she realized that she had forgotten Raphael's name, so she just finished her sentence with "Hey," as if that was all she had meant to say all along. She didn't say anything about the tiger; instead waiting to see Raphael's reaction to the scene before she would decide whether or not the tiger was actually there.

Kentucky? Kaspar tried to conjure up a mental image of the map of America that Jake had in his textbook. He could see a lot of lines all over it, and he knew which one was California, but he couldn't remember Kentucky. It was in the middle somewhere, right? On the left? Or was it on the right? Either way, he was a long way from home... How was he going to get back to Jake?
Another bite of turkey passed down his throat before Kaspar looked back up at Tonya again. He watched her curiously as she glanced around the kitchen, apparently watching something that he couldn't see. He was about to ask her what it was when she finally answered his question. No dogs... That was good. He breathed a little easier after that. If there weren't any dogs here, then there was nothing for him to be afraid of, right? Right. Jake tld him that he didn't have to be afraid of anything because he was so big. Kaspar never really understood that statement, but it seemed to make sense on the numerous occasions when Jake was little and Kaspar had always been the one to check under the bed and in the closet for monsters. He didn't have to be afraid of them because Jake said so.
No sooner had he finished this train of thought than a dog-smell filled the room, and Kaspar heard claws on the floor. Clattering claws. He turned, but by the time he did the back door had been left open and whatever-it-was had left. Kaspar's ears went back again, and he waited for a while, looking around and thinking of akita-dogs stealing his food and barking at him, until the dog-thing was seen again. It didn't look like the akita-dogs Madam kept, but it was still a dog, and its sudden appearance made Kaspar jump in fear. He let out a yowl and skidded on the floor, nearly falling over in his frantic attempt to hide behind the kitchen table, which was completely impossible considering his size. "You said no dogs!" he shouted, glaring in fright at the newcomer and twitching his tail back and forth in irritation.

Raphael stood up. Hmmmm. He's one of us. he thought, as his paws changed into the rough hands that he had grown acustomed to with time. He watched the giant tiger twitch his tail, shouting about him. This had to be the first time that Raphael had ever been thought of as a /dog/.
"Hey." he replied to Tonya. "Who is this?" he asked, pointing under the table at the tiger. "Is he new here? Or is he on his way so soon?" Raphael asked, especially since he had over heard Tonya telling the tiger about his long trek from Cali. "California, huh? That's cool. Me and my sister," he paused, trying to guage the reaction at finding out htat there was another sibling, "came from around here. I can show you the better hunting grounds, if that's your thing." he finished, while jumping to sit on the counter.
"Oh," he added, remembering that the strange tiger was calling him a /dog/, "There is a difference between me and your...common house pet. One, I don't like playing nice, and two, I'm part grey /wolf/. Not dog, wolf. trust me, there is a difference." he remarked with a grim satisfaction that only he could understand.

Tonya noticed Kaspar watching her curiously, as if he was wondering what she was looking at. Another point for the 'he's really there' theory. But she was snatched out of her thoughts by Kaspar's reaction to Raphael, the big tiger almost looking comical as he fearfully tried to hide behind the table. Tonya would have responded that Raphael wasn't really a dog, except that Raphael was there, and she still didn't quite believe that Kaspar was real. She had to be darn careful not to talk to illusions when other people could overhear.
Then Raphael began to ask questions about Kaspar. Okay, so the talking tiger really was there. Finally convinced of Kaspar's existence, Tonya's first panicked thought was whether she had said anything that would make him suspicious, let him know that she was /different/. She remembered all too well her experience with Amber, when she had made such an idiot of herself that she was grateful for the squirrel-girl's short memory span. But, as she rehashed the conversation between her and Kaspar, she was a little relieved to find that there had been no great, glaring giveaways. Just a few, small ones. Like 'Are you a good tiger?' Tonya tensed in sudden embarrassment at the thought of having said that to a real person.
"This is Kaspar. Yeah, he's new," Tonya mumbled quietly, answering Raphael's questions after a pause. She spoke quietly not only because of her shyness, but also because she wasn't quite sure whether she should answer, or whether she was supposed to let Kaspar answer for himself.

Kaspar was, quite honestly, taken aback just a little bit by this new visitor. Sure, it was a dog, which in and of itself made Kaspar's neck prickle and his ears go back, but... Now it was talking! He'd never heard a dog do anything but bark and growl at him before... Only people talked, right? People, and him. The thought never occurred to Kaspar that if he could talk, there might be others who could do the same. His fascination only increased as the dog stood up and hopped up on the counter like Jake used to do sometimes when Madam wasn't around. Reflexively, Kaspar glanced into the hall to make sure they wouldn't get in trouble for it, but then he remembered that Madam wasn't anywhere nearby.
He stared, open-mouthed, as the dog talked. It said it was from California, with its sister... There were two of them? Two talking dogs that walked around like Jake and Madam? That was almost too much for Kaspar to handle. He barely paid any attention to what the dog was saying about where it came from, too busy trying to wrap his mind around the idea that there were two of these weird dogs. He did catch onto the word "hunting" though. Jake used to hide stuffed animals with food near them, and take Kaspar around until he found all of them. Did this dog do that, too? Who hid the stuffed animals then? Maybe his sister... That made sense.
The dog's next words confused him a little, too. He wasn't a dog? He looked like a dog... Not like the akita-dogs so much, but still a dog... Wait, wasn't a wolf a dog, too? Kaspar voiced his confusion after Tonya had introduced him. "But... Jake told me that wolves are in a dog family... Doesn't that mean you're a dog?" he tilted his head to the side slightly, curious now, but still not about to come out from behind the table. Dogs could jump pretty fast, so he wanted to keep something between the dog and him. Kaspar glanced at Tonya to make sure she wasn't gone - he didn't want to be alone with the dog-person - before turning his attention back on the dog on the counter.

Raphael's ears twitched in irritation. He disliked being corrected. "Alright, so I am technically a /dog/," he stated, while acting as if the last word was a sour taste in his mouth, "but I'm not what you think I am, and that much is very clear. Besides, who is this "Jake" character that you're talking about?" he asked, inquisitively. Then there were footsteps on the stairs coming down. "Great." Raph muttered, because they were not the footsteps of claws or paws, but what could have been mistaken as a dancer. It was his sister.
Julia yawned, wincing as she stretched, because the stitches in her neck had yet to heal, as did the IV marks where they did a blood transfusion on that depressing first day. "Raphael," she yawned again, "what's going on down here?" she asked. "I heard you talking, and then I...Oh!" she exclaimed, staring at the tiger under the table. "Who're you? I'm Julia. I'm guessing you already know Raphael," She said while pointing at him, "and Tonya." nodding toward the shy girl. "Raph, how was the hunt?"
"Fine." he grumbled. Raph knew that he wanted to get out of here, but first he had to do something. "Kasper, is it? Well, this is the sister that I was talking about. She's my twin sister, to be more exact." He said, jumping off the counter and standing next to her, hoping that the tiger would see the similarities between the two of them.

Tonya occupied herself with simply listening to the conversation that was going on around her. She stepped back a little from the others, making it clear that she was fine with the idea of not being included. Besides, she didn't know anything about what was or wasn't a dog, so she had nothing to add, anyway.
Tonya looked up when Julia entered the room, abruptly remembering what had happened the day of the House meeting. She shoved such thoughts out of her head, and gave the other girl a nervous smile in greeting, making note of the name 'Raphael.' Now that she heard it, the name sounded right. She perked up a little upon hearing her own name; the way you do when something catches your attention, and she said, "Yeah," to indicate that she had, in fact, met Kaspar. Hey wait, Tonya thought. How did Julia know her name? Had she mentioned it at the House meeting? She must have, she decided.

Kaspar was still quite wary of this dog-guy. Raphael. Weird name... Kaspar wasn't sure he wanted to meet his sister. Sister meant they looked kind of alike, Kaspar remembered, and if they looked the same then that meant two dog-people. Kaspar decided that there were too many dogs around here. Not so many that he was thinking of leaving just yet, but too many for him to be comfortable. At least they weren't trying to steal his food or bite him like the Akita-dogs at home.
Kaspar looked up as he heard footsteps coming down the stairs and into the kitchen. A girl walked in, looked around, and asked him who he was. Before he had a chance to say his name however, the dog-guy spoke again. When he introduced the girl - Julia - as his sister and went to stand next to her as though presenting himself to an audience, Kaspar just stared. For several seconds he looked between the two of them, then sat down, quite thoroughly confused.
"Twins means you look the same, right?" Kaspar asked, tilting his head to the side as he tried to figure this out. "Then how come you're not doggy?" he asked Julia, "Or how come you don't look like a normal person?" Kaspar had never considered that his words might offend either of them - particularly Raphael. His innocence might easily be mistaken for mocking though, which did not bode well for the timid tiger.

Raphael's ears twitched in agitation. "Well," he said through gritted teeth, "we aren't the same because some evil, egotistical little rat of a scientist decided that we weren't--"
"Raph." Julia had cut him off, her voice was unusually sharp. "We don't look the same because different things had happened to us. Raphael was... he was....well, you see....How can I explain this? Oh! I know how. Okay, Raphael was...crossed, genetically, with a grey wolf. They, changed him beyond what can be...brought back. He is going to forever be the way his is." She said, hoping that her brother would be kind enough to just accept it, like she had, but instead, his fur just bristled. "As for myself, well, I'm not "doggy" because I'm psychic. I can read minds, and I can fight, and pretty well, or so I'm told." She said, again looking at her brother, who just glanced toward her, and then shifted his focus foreward again.

As the conversation continued, and Tonya continued to listen without contributing any words of her own, a growl from her stomach reminded her what she was doing before Kaspar had interrupted her train of thought. Lunch. She had been getting lunch for herself. Since she wasn't really /in/ the conversation, it wouldn't be too rude for her to go back to fixing herself something to eat, would it? Besides, doing something was always better than just standing there. She debated with herself for a moment or two, stuck between the embarrassment of being thought rude and the awkwardness of just standing there listening to a conversation with nothing to contribute. Her stomach then growled again, tilting the decision in its favor. Tonya opened the refrigerator again, but this time she spotted some strawberry jam, and decided that she would rather have that than a turkey sandwich. Her mind drifted back to the conversation, hearing Julia begin to explain why she was different from Raphael. Tonya opened up the cabinet to get some bread, and, still trying to shake off the nagging feeling that she was being rude by ignoring everyone else, she waited for a pause in the conversation, spreading the jam on the bread as she anxiously waited. When the pause came, she meekly offered, "Um, would anyone else like something to eat?"

Kaspar, who had now stepped partially out from behind the table, stared at Julia as she explained to him exactly what had happened. He tilted his head to one side slightly, a confused expression appearing on his face. He opened his mouth a little, then closed it, and opened it again when he thought she'd finished. When she started to talk about herself, however, he closed his mouth again and sat down, not wanting to interrupt. This sounded fascinating, but he didn't really know what she was talking about. Generally? How can you cross something generally? And what was a physic?
When Julia was quiet, Kaspar started to open his mouth again and ask the questions that were still whizzing around his head. However, before he could get a single word out, he heard something much more pressing and important than what a generally wolf was or a physic. He heard the word "eat." Jumping to his feet, Kaspar turned his head to face Tonya and said, "Food? Yeah!" A silly expression, half-begging and half smiling, crossed his face that reminded one of a pet dog begging for food. Except, this "dog" was about ten times bigger and ate about ten times as much. Kaspar truly had what could be called a bottomless stomach. He loved food, and it was a rare day that he wouldn't be willing to take a tasty treat from someone's hand, or better yet have a whole meal.
