((Feel free to use The Pit in your character's backstory, as long as you ask me first))
This lab is known by its captives (and by a few of the scientists, even) as The Pit. The name comes from the fact that the lab is underground, far below the slums of Detroit, Michigan, where the lab resides. The aboveground entrance to the lab is actually inside an orphanage, which the lab uses as cover, as well as a source for subjects. The belowground lab is huge; the mazelike corridors of cells seem to go on forever. The lab uses cells (the kind you might find in a jail) rather than the conventional cages. Each cell typically held four or five experiments, but some experiments are deemed 'dangerous,' and put in cells by themselves. The corridors of the lab are, as mentioned before, mazelike. This is to cut down on escapees, as very few could ever find their way out before being recaptured, even if they were able to get out of their cells. The entire lab has an atmosphere of dull routine and apathy; everyone simply living out their day to day existence, and many experiments soon cease to care about what's happening to them. Once free, however, this turns out to be a plus for the experiments, as it dulls the painful memories of the lab.
It should also be mentioned that Christina Payne, a heartless dictator who firmly believes that no misstep on the experiments' part should go unpunished, worked at The Pit for several years, occasionally transferring to other labs for a year or two at a time. You learned very quickly not to get on her bad side. That meant no noises, and no showing of any emotion. No crying, no sobbing, no scowling, and most of all, no smiling or laughing. And if you disobeyed, she'd give you an injection of her infamous Blood-Red Serum; a substance created for no other purpose than to cause unbearable pain.
Sven Ahlström is another prominent figure at The Pit. He's a very high-ranking official who specializes in various experiments with thought-controlled powers. Psychics, telekinetics, and various other supernatural-esque things. He has a computer chip implanted in his scalp that allows him to take control of his subjects' thought-controlled powers, so that he can have access to their powers without actually having to take the risks of undergoing neurological enhancement himself.
One day, there was a fire at The Pit. It was sometime in August of 2005, and the entire place was reduced to ashes (although the orphanage was almost unharmed). Fortunately, the fire triggered a computer malfunction which caused all the cell doors to open, so some of the experiments were able to escape. If they could get through the maze of corridors, and up the seeming infinity of stairs, that is. Most of them didn't, though, instead dying in the flames.
Rumors flew that Christina had perished in the fire, but they turned out to be false. Some of those that found out about her surviving made a joke of it, saying, "The fires of hell can't kill the devil, you know."
Since the fire, The Pit was, slowly but surely, rebuilt. Sometime in July 2006, it was finally finished, and is now back in business. The scientists there are trying to recapture all the experiments they lost in the fire, but so far have met with limited success. They have managed to collect maybe a dozen so far. Sven, unlike Christina, stayed on at The Pit after it burned, intending to continue work there after it was rebuilt. Most of the recaptured experiments are his, since he has a definite advantage in recapturing his own subjects.
